Vikings upset in regional championship

Irving, TX - After another dominant, undefeated district championship season the Vikings high hopes of competing for a state championship came to an abrupt end in the regional championship game. Bishop Lynch jumped on the Vikings early and held to win 12-10 in extra innings. With the loss, the Vikings season comes to an end, one win shy of 20.

Lynch jumped on junior pitcher Makena Uranga early scoring two runs in the first inning on an inside the park home run.

Uranga, who battled all night to keep the Vikings within striking distance, allowed nine earned runs on 17 hits.

Offensively, the Vikings scored their first runs in the bottom of the third inning, as Uranga knocked in two runs with a triple. The Vikings would not score again until the bottom of sixth as they began to mount a late rally.

Junior catcher Brooklyn Bennett’s 2 RBI single along with a fielder's choice from senior Emmy Hornick plated another Vikings run.

Trailing by four runs, 9-5 coming to bat in the bottom of the 7th, Bennett came through again for the Vikings, hitting a bases clearing double with two outs to tie the score at 9.

The Vikings were unable to sustain the momentum as the Friars scored three times in the top of 8th.

The Vikings would have one last charge in them scoring one run and loading the bases in the bottom of the 8th. Hornick, who will continue her career at Abilene Christian University, flew out to shortstop with the bases loaded to end the game.

The loss ends the illustrious and record setting careers of Hornick, Kaylee Cox and Jackie Ericson, who were apart of four district championships.
