Vikings split opening tournament

Grapevine, TX - After opening the season on the wrong side against Paschal, the Viking turned their attention to their first tournament of the season competing in the Mid Cities Classic. The Vikings played four games over the two day weekend, winning two and losing two.

Game one the Vikings faced Euless HS and came away victorious, 9-1. Cecilia Saldivar was a machine at the plate, knocking in four runs to go along with her three hits. Saldivar’s two run home run put the Vikings on the board in the first inning and they never looked back. The Vikings would go on to score three runs in the second and two more runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Junior Makena Uranga led the way in the circle allowing just two hits over her four innings of work.

In game two the Vikings lost 7-0 to Colleyville Heritage. The Vikings were able to collect six hits but were unable to push a run across the board. Damaris Saldivar was the lone bright spot at the plate as she went 2 for 3.

The start of day two for the Vikings began on the right foot as they defeated Fossil Ridge 10-4. Leading 5-4 to start the bottom of the fourth inning, the Vikings bats exploded for five runs to end the game. Uranga was solid at both the plate and in the pitcher's circle. At the plate she was 3 for 3 including a home run. In the circle after allowing an uncharacteristic four runs in the opening frame, she settled down, striking out five to lead her team to victory.

The final game of the tournament, the Vikings lost a tight one, 7-6 to L.D. Bell HS. In a back and forth affair, the visitors got the last laugh. Winning by one run heading into the bottom of the fifth, Uranga pitching in relief of Hornick allowed a two-run walk off single.

In the batters box Emily Johnston, Brooklyn Bennett and Hornick had multiple hits, led by Johnston who was 3 for 3.

The Vikings will return to action Monday, facing off against Weatherford in a non-district matchup.
