Vikings run wild in homecoming win over Liberty Christian
Fort Worth, TX - With adversity staring them in the face, the second ranked Vikings (6-2, 5-0) punished the visiting Warriors on the ground in route to a 38-2 homecoming victory in front of over 1500 fans. Led by interim head coach KJ Williams, the Vikings rushed for 272 yards led by the running back tandem of sophomore Kewan Lacy and junior DK Smittick.
The Vikings overcame a slow start to lead 21-2 at the half. The Warriors as the result of a safety as the Vikings snapped the ball out of the end zone. After catching their breath and re-grouping, senior defensive back Jackson Reed intercepted a Warriors pass and raced 30 yards for the pick six.
Later in the second quarter, junior quarterback Cole Matsuda would connect with senior wide receiver Tre Parks-Vinson for the first of his two touchdown passes on the night. His second touchdown would go to senior wide receiver Skyler Patterson, who would catch a slant and do the rest, as he out ran two Warriors defenders, 50 yards to the end zone.
The ground game would take over in the second half. Lacy ran one in from 5 yards out to make the score 28-2 followed by Smittick who scored his own 5 yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Senior kicker Bryan Gomez would add a 25 yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter, accounting for the final three points of the evening.
Lacy finished the game with 154 yards rushing, while Smittick would finish with 117 yards.
Matsuda was 12-27 for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively the Vikings held the Warriors at bay all evening long. The Warriors never threatened the Vikings, as they never entered the red zone.
The Vikings will be back in action next Friday as they travel to Parish Episcopal in a matchup featuring the #1 and #2 ranked teams in TAPPS Division I. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 pm in Dallas.
