Curse over, Vikings defeat Cathedral, win area championship

Fort Worth, TX - The same song and the same dance was being played out Saturday afternoon on the campus of Nolan Catholic. El Paso Cathedral was again the foe staring the Vikings in the face in the TAPPS Division I Area Championship match. Cathedral had defeated the Vikings five times in a row but the streak came to an end this season.

Behind goals from Ethan Pearson and Lucas Kolp, the Vikings broke the curse, securing the area championship 2-0. With the win, the Vikings will advance to the regional championship against TCA.

“This has obviously been a stumbling block for us in the past against Cathedral, as they always present us with some problems. But I am proud of our boys for sticking together and staying the course throughout the match,” head coach Sean Eddington stated.

In a back and forth match early on, the teams traded shots on goal, with either team unable to push one across. All that changed as the Vikings got on the board first, added a late insurance goal and used a stout defense to finish off the visitors from El Paso.

“Hopefully the boys use this as a confidence booster going forward in the playoffs and we make a deep run. We have all the pieces!” Eddington said.

Regional championship match details will be further coming.
